Description

James Inglis, Chief Engineer of the Great Western Railway (GWR), commisioned a series of photographs recording the construction of this line. By 1899 some of the labourers' chores were performed by machines like the 'Steam Navvy' shown here, which was built by the Lincolnshire firm of Ruston, Proctor & Co Ltd.
