A Craven 70-ton crane is shown lifting a '0 Clas' 0-4-4T locomotive at the North Eastern Railway's (NER) Darlington Works. In 1863 the NER had merged with the Stockton & Darlington Railway and went on to inherit the latter's locomotive works in Darlington. This became the main workshop for the company, with its administrative office a mile away at Stooperdale.
