Colour engraving by Josiah Wood Whymper taken from 'Phenomena of Nature', published in London in 1849 for the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. 'The vast barrier formed by an extensive chain of mountains would shut out the countries on either side from all communication with each other were it not for certain breaks in the line whereby a pasage is obtained over this colosal wall. Such openings are called 'pases', and are so frequent that in the Swis portion of the Alpine Chain alone there are not les than fifty.'
