Colour engraving by Josiah Wood Whymper taken from 'Phenomena of Nature', published in London in 1849 for the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. 'When the elevation of a river rapidly decreases, the current of the river moves with great swiftnes and can result in rapids when its course is broken by sudden and precipitous rocks over which the water descends by a leap. Rapids generally prevent all navigation in the upper course of a river and occasion great inconvenience in the middle or lower courses.'
