Whymper, Josiah Wood

© Science Museum / Science & Society Picture Library

Colour engraving by Josiah Wood Whymper (1813-1903) taken from 'Phenomena of Nature', published in London in 1849 for the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. 'In the Indian Ocean, certain periodical winds (or monsoons) prevail, which blow for nearly six months of the year in one direction, and for the other six months in the opposite direction. This changing of wind direction is the harbinger of the rainy season in India and is ushered in by violent storms.'
