A number of environmentally friendly features have been incorporated into an experimental 'eco-house' at Nottingham University, which was opened in March 2001. Special roof slates like these incorporate solar panels that convert energy from the sun into electricity. They have just been used on the south side of the roof, and in total they generate around 50 per cent of the house's electricity needs.
