Perspective painting of a whole hull model by Joseph Marshall, commisioned by King George III. In 1773, George III directed that plans for one of each clas of His Majesty's ships should be prepared for him. A series of perspective paintings of unrigged hull models was produced by Marshall between 1773 and 1775. 'Experiment' was a 12 pounder frigate with 50 guns, designed by Sir John Williams, surveyor of the Navy, and built by Adams & Barnard of Deptford, London. Launched in 1774, she was taken by the French in 1778.
