The 'Astro-Chron' was one of the first domestic quartz clocks. The quartz crystal clock was first introduced in the late 1920s but its use was confined to observatories, laboratories and time standards. Continued development in electronics and battery technology yielded the first domestic quartz clocks and wristwatches in the late 1960s, and their popularity came to eclipse all other types of domestic clock and watch. This example, model 38/0001, was manufactured by E A Combs Ltd.
