Protest march, Manchester, 13 October 1963. 'A march through Manchester took place today, organised jointly by the ASLEF, NUR and TsA unions, protesting against the application of the Beeching Report on British Railways.' Sir Richard Beeching (1913-1985) was created chairman of the British Railways Board in 1963. His 'Beeching Plan' completely transformed the railway network, abandoning over 6,000 miles of track and 4,000 stations, and had a tremendous effect on the future of the railways. He was created a life peer in 1965.
