Photograph. The early photographers' interest in railways often extended beyond views of locomotives and the construction of new lines. Here, navvies working on the building of the London & North Western and Midland Railways' joint colliery lines in Leicestershire, celebrate a Gala Day with a barrow race at Bosworth, watched by local dignitaries. The long exposure required has blurred the rippling flags and the movements of the onlookers.
