Engraving by L Poyet taken from the magazine 'La Nature' published in Paris in 1881. An interior view of a lace factory showing a large Jacquard mechanism below a series of machines to wind the lace. The Jacquard loom, developed by the Frenchman Joseph Marie Jacquard (1752-1834) in 1804, used a punched card system to weave complicated patterns in textiles.
