Sea shell used as floating wick lamp, 19th century.

Description

This example is from Virginia, United States, but similar shells were used in many places. By putting oil in the body and laying a wick in the neck, a shell could be used as a lamp. This one was used in the 19th century, but shell lamps were made centuries before.
