Description

Plate taken from the 'Illustrated London News' (1852), showing a meeting of unemployed engineers and machinists at St Martin's Hall, Long Acre, London. The workers were 'thrown out of employment by the resolutions of the masters to resist the demands of the Amalgamated Society.' The hall is lit by by a series of large gas chandeliers.
