Artificial heart, 2000.

Richardson, Claire

© Science Museum / Science & Society Picture Library

Description

Hundreds of people die every year because there are not enough human hearts available for transplantation. Mechanical hearts could be the answer and could be available for transplanting by 2005. A human body would not reject an artificial heart because the immune system will not recognise any of its materials. It is powered by rechargeable batteries.
