Description

The East Coast Main Line and its centres of engineering like York were prime targets for the German Air Force between 1940 and 1943. In this image, the Sir Ralph Wedgwood A4 clas 4-6-2 steam locomotive no 4469 lies damaged in the wreckage of York North locomotive depot, following an air raid on 29 April 1942.
