The New England Viaduct, 1857.

Warne, O

© NRM / Pictorial Collection / Science & Society Picture Library

Coloured lithograph by O Warne. The structure shown in this lithograph, which we would now call a bridge rather than a viaduct, was designed by the English civil engineer John Rastrick (1780-1856). Since no structure called 'The New England Viaduct' has existed, the bridge was either not built or renamed before opening. Warne produced this lithograph at a time when line was being laid between East Grinstead, Leatherhead and Uckfield (1853-1863). Signed by Warne on the mount.
