Ernest Bevin (1881-1951), Labour candidate for Gateshead, trying to gain support before the general election on 27 October 1931. Bevin helped to build up the National Transport and General Workers' Union and was its General Secretary between 1921-1940. In 1940, he became Minister of Labour under Churchill's coalition government (1940-1945) and later became Foreign Secretary in Clement Atlee's government (1945-1951) becoming involved in the Berlin airlift and trying to settle the Palestinian problems.
