Sir Richard Stafford Cripps (1889-1952), Labour candidate for Bristol, trying to gain support before the general election on 27 October 1931. The election returned the coalition National Government to power but Stafford Cripps refused to serve under Labour Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald (1886-1937). Photograph by Harold Tomlin.
