Photograph taken on the visit by Mexican President Porfirio Diaz to the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, in 1905. Between 1899 and 1907, the British construction firm S Pearson & Co built a railway line acros the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, connecting Mexico's Gulf and Pacific coasts, as well as port facilities at either end of the line. The isthmus is also one of Mexico's oil producing regions.
