In 1831 Doctor Elliotson (1791-1868) became a profesor at London University and helped to establish University College Hospital. His conversion to mesmerism in 1837 cost him his profesorship the following year, but his large practice was relatively unaffected. One of the first to use the stethoscope, he experimented on the action of drugs, encouraged clinical study and founded the Phrenological Society.
