Engraved plate taken from the 'Illustrated London News' (1865), showing a sketch made the day after the accident. This South Eastern Railway fast tidal train from Folkestone, carrying 110 pasengers returning from Boulogne via Paris, derailed on the bridge near Staplehurst. Platelayers had not finished laying replacement track before the train arrived, so that it fell 15 feet to the muddy rivulet below, killing 10 pasengers.
