Engraved plate taken from the 'Illustrated London News' (1865), showing a sketch made by one of the pasengers shortly after the accident. This 32 carriage Great Western Railway Birkenhead excursion train ran off the rails when the driver of the front engine failed to see a green caution flag. The flag was half a mile up the track from where platelayers were removing the ballast from around the sleepers to work on the line. The engine driver was killed along with 15 or so pasengers.
