Driver and fireman of a London, Brighton & South Coast Railway (LB&SCR) locomotive. The low tender provided a good view for photographers but left the crew exposed. The cabs of different types of locomotive varied only in detail and the basic controls were the same. In the centre are two injector handles for filling the boiler with water and two gauges to show the water level. The boiler presure and other gauges are mounted on the cab side. Above the firehole door is a shelf to keep the oil cans warm, but also proved ideal for keeping tea hot. Photograph by Frank Burtt.
