Mezzotint by Susan Esther Reid after an oil painting by Robert Davy. Instrument maker Arnold (1736-1799) is shown holding a chronometer, with a book of tables beside an inkstand on a table. Amongst Arnold's achievements was to supply the chronometer (his No 3 chronometer) that Captain James Cook (1728-1779) took with him in the 'Resolution' on his second exploratory voyage to the South Seas in 1772.
