Prototype 'Deltic' diesel locomotive, 1955. This 3,300 hp diesel-electric locomotive was designed and built by the English Electric Co Ltd and incorporated two Napier 'Deltic' diesel engines. As a result of this prototype's performance, 22 further Deltics were ordered by British Railways to replace 55 steam locomotives on the East Coast main line between London King's Cros and Edinburgh. At the time of its introduction, steam traction was still dominant and the Deltic's streamlined appearance made a big impact.
