Description

'The progres of traffic is halted as the Saunders Roe hovercraft, travelling under its own power hovers over the main road between Lee-on- Solent and Southampton, as it returned from the beach after undergoing a series of trials.' The SR-N1 was invented by Sir Christopher Cockerell (1910-1999) and was the first hovercraft. The SR- N1 is seen here returning to HMS Ariel, the Royal Navy establishment at Lee-on-Solent.
