A Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway (LYR) cart delivering finished cloth to a wholesaler in Southmill Street while its horse takes refreshment. The Lancashire cotton industry consumed over 2 million tons of raw cotton a year, the LYR often handling it four times between its arrival in Liverpool and its completion as cloth for sale. On the right is Manchester Town Hall, a victorian extravagance emphasising the city's industrial wealth and importance. Photograph by Horwich.
