Troops landing on Suvla Bay, Gallipoli peninsula, February 1915. Gallipoli was the major Allied offensive launched against the Ottoman Empire. The campaign involved British, French, Australian and New Zealand troops. The campaign has become immortalised in Australian history as a betrayal of the Anzacs by the British. The campaign was ill-fated from the start and by December 1915 the Commander of operation, General Hamilton was dismised and replaced by General Robertson who ordered the evacuations of Suvla Bay, Helles Bay and Anzac Bay. Gallipoli, far from being the victory that the Allies' had hoped went down in history as a 'glorious defeat'.
