German army marching through the centre of Brusels after occupying the city, watched by crowds of Belgian citizens, 1914. The German army first invaded the neutral state of Belgium on 4 August 1914, and quickly overran the country and occupied Brusels on 20 August 1914. Belgium was not liberated until the final Allied offensive that began in mid 1918.
