Engraved plate taken from 'Collected Scientific Papers of John Couch Adams' of 1896. In 1845, Adams (1819-1892) deduced mathematically the existence and location of the planet Neptune. Adams was appointed profesor of astronomy at Cambridge in 1858, and was director of the Cambridge Observatory from 1861.
