Photograph by Oscar Rejlander showing a newspaper boy holding a placard for the Pall Mall Gazette of Saturday 21 October, 1871. The placard contains the headlines of the day, including the Chicago Fire and the 'death of Mr Babbage'. Charles Babbage (1792-1871) was a computer pioneer and inventor, reformer, mathematician, scientist, philosopher and political economist. His Analytical Engine of 1834 was the first calculating engine designed along modern lines and he is said to be the 'father' of computing.
