Description

Opened by Queen Victoria (1819-1901) on 16 January 1850, the High Level Bridge was designed by Robert Stephenson (1803-1859) to span the River Tyne at Newcastle, Tyne and Wear, for rail services on the York, Newcastle & Berwick Railway. It was an outstanding example of engineering skill, employing a series of cast iron bowstring arches springing from tall stone piers. The bridge still stands.
