The front cover of 'Mechanics' Magazine', published 24 October, 1829, promoting Robert (1803-1859) and George Stephenson's (1781-1848) 'Rocket' which had won the Rainhill trials earlier that month. The Rainhill trials were a competition set up to find the most suitable locomotive for haulage on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. The Rocket won the competition and subsequently ran on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway from 1829 to 1839, and the Midgeholme Colliery Railway from 1836 to 1840.
