Fold-out frontispiece from the first volume of the indeces to the 'Encyclopedie, ou Dictionnaire Raisonne des Sciences, des Arts et des Metiers', (Encyclopedia or Dictionary of the Sciences, Arts and Profesions) edited by Denis Diderot (1713-1784) and Jean d'Alembert (1717-1783) and published in 14 volumes between 1751 and 1765. The entries were divided into three sections: Memory (the manufacturing trades and natural history; Reason (the sciences, medicine, language and philosophy), and Imagination (the arts). The tree of knowledge is a visual representation of this clasificatory scheme.
