Description

Proposition 23, Theorem 18, (shown here in the first edition as Theorem 17), from Newton's 'Principia Mathematica' (1687): 'If the density of a fluid composed of particles that are repelled from one another is as the compresion, the centrifugal forces [or forces of repulsion] of the particles are inversely proportional to the distances between their centres. And conversely, particles that are repelled from one another by forces that are inversely proportional to the distances between their centres constitute an elastic fluid whose density is proportional to the compresion.' The discoveries of English physicist and mathematician Isaac Newton (1642-1727) were prolific and hugely influential on science and thought.
