Page showing astronomer and mathematician Edmond Halley's (1656-1742) Ode to Newton from the first edition of Newton's 'Principia Mathematica' (1687). English physicist and mathematician Isaac Newton's (1642-1727) discoveries were prolific and exerted a huge influence on science and thought: they include the three laws of motion, the theory of gravitation and the law of cooling. As a mathematician Newton discovered the binomial theorem and the calculus.
