Migratory family travelling acros the desert on US Highway 70 in search of work in the cotton fields, Roswell, New Mexico, in May 1937. Photograph taken by Dorothea Lange (1895-1965) when working for the Farm Security Administration (FSA) as part of Roosevelt's New Deal. The FSA produced some of the most remarkable social documentary photographs of the 20th century in their attempt to produce an encyclopaedic record of American life between 1935 and 1944, employing such photograhers as Dorothea Lange, Jack Delano and Ben Shahn.
