'Evelyn Andrews, formerly a sales girl in a Liverpool store, finds washing at 6am, in a corrugated iron shed in winter a bit 'tough', but what an appetite she gets! Betty Stephenson, who was a hairdreser at St Annes, Lancs, now goes off into the forest with her 'elevenses' of bread and dripping done up in a red-spotted handkerchief.' Photograph by Reg Sayers.
