Sir William Arthur Stanier (1876-1965), 1936. Stanier was Chief Mechanical Engineer of the London, Midland & Scottish Railway between 1932- 1942, for whom he designed the Clas 5, Jubilee and Coronation clas locomotives. From 1942 he became scientific adviser to the Ministry of Production, and late was director of Power Jets Ltd and a memeber of the aeronautical Research Council. Photograph.
