Detail of a woodcut. Bernhard von Breydenbach (1440-1497) was a wealthy nobleman and deacon of Mainz Cathedral, who made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1483, publishing an account of his journey entitled 'Peregrinatio in Terram Sanctam' in 1486. The book contains an important detailed map of Jerusalem, part of which is shown here.
