Oil painting by or after Alexander Nasmyth. Patrick Miller (1731-1815) was an Edinburgh merchant who became director of the Bank of Scotland in 1767 and deputy governor in 1790. He was also a keen inventor and experimented with the paddle wheel and the design of shallow-drafted ships which could carry large quantities of cargo on flat bottoms.
