'To clear a pasage through rock or stone, one man drills whilst his mate loads the debris into trucks. Compresed air for the drills is brought along the galleries.' Photograph taken by James Jarche of the Daily Herald newspaper for a series of articles called 'In Search of Wales' written by H V Morton, (1934). The pictures included the first flash photographs taken underground, which involved a considerable risk of an explosion. The articles were later published together in a book.
