Plate taken from the Illustrated London News, 21 November 1874. Part of a series entitled 'Sketches in Eastern Turkestan', it shows three men sitting on the ground outside a traditional round tent or yurt. Eastern Turkestan today is part of Xinjiang province in the far west of China. The indigenous people, known as the Uighur, are predominantly Muslims.
