Description

The boys in a mining village are usually only too eager to join their fathers in the pit. They go down as soon as they are old enough to work. Photograph taken by James Jarche of the Daily Herald newspaper for a series of articles called 'In Search of Wales' written by H V Morton in 1934. The pictures included the first flash photographs taken underground, which involved a considerable risk of an explosion. The articles were later published together in a book of the same name.
