Engraving by James Ward after Wright's self-portrait, c late 18th century, published by Colnaghi and Co, 1 February 1807. Joseph Wright (1734-1797), an English genre and portrait painter, was known as 'Wright of Derby', after the city in which he spent most of his life. He painted a number of self-portraits, and was also referred to as the 'Rembrandt of the Midlands'. His most famous works however, depict dramatically lit scenes of industry and science.
