Portrait of Sir Francis Beaufort FRS (1774-1857) by S Pearce, engraved by J Scott. Beaufort devised the 'Beaufort Scale' (1806). The Beaufort Scale is a system of recording wind velocity, it is a numerical scale ranging from 0 to 17, calm being indicated by a 0 and a hurricane by 12. It received international recognition in 1874. Dimensions: 430 mm x 340 mm.
