Engraving from the Illustrated London News (Vol 64/2 1864) published as part of a lengthy celebration of the railway locomotive and George Stephenson (1781-1848) in particular. The picture shows the fitting shop where men asembled locomotives from components made in other parts of the works, completing one locomotive a week. The manufactory supplied locomotives worldwide, including the Cape Town Railway, the Great Indian Peninsular Railway and the Imperial Railways of Japan.
