'Back in England after an absence of nearly three years, the Duke and Duches of Windsor are now the guests of Major Dudley Metcalfe in Ashdown Forest, Susex'. Following his abdication on 11 December 1936, Edward VIII (1894-1972) was given the title Duke of Windsor. Constitutionally, he could not marry a divorcee and remain on the throne. His wife, formerly married to Ernest Simpson, was born Besie Wallis Warfield.
