Description

This type of balance measures weight rather than mas. The oval spring stretches when a weight is hung from the balance, turning a needle and giving a reading on the dial. This reading varies with gravity. On the Moon, for example, the spring balance would indicate a weight one sixth of that which it would indicate on Earth.
