Fred Clarke as a switchboard operator, late 1930s. Frederick William Clarke, the younger brother of Arthur C Clarke, is depicted here using a Strowger automatic telephone exchange at the Bishops Lydeard Post Office. Arthur Charles Clarke (b 1917) grew up on a farm at Bishops Lydeard in Somerset. Many members of his family worked in communications. Arthur was to become a leading science fiction writer, following a period of work in scientific research, but he also worked at the Post Office as a teenager and maintained a lifelong interest in communications.
